NSF funds "Mobile Infospaces"
for three years at Michigan State University
September 1, 2002
East Lansing, MI
The National Science Foundation has awarded a research grant
to Dr. Frank Biocca, Director of the M.I.N.D. Labs and Ameritech
Professor of Telecommunication, Information and Media, and Dr.
Charles Owen, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer
Science and Engineering, both at Michigan State University, East
Lansing, Michigan.
"Mobile Infospaces: Mapping Information to Neuropsychological
Patterns of Human-Spatial Cognition to Support Wearable, Augmented-Reality
Interface Design" proposes to extend neurological and behavioral
research on human spatial cognition. The project will systematically
map egocentric (i.e., body centered) spatial perception and object
manipulation in AR systems, develop multi-user mobile AR prototypes
with both body and environmentally stabilized components, systemically
conduct HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) experiments to evaluate
and confirm the effect of new Mobile Infospaces interface techniques
and group navigation, situational awareness, and cognitive maps
of the environment.
The HCI Research will provide an empirically validated theoretical
foundation for augmented reality design using a neuropsychological
and behaviorally valid human factors model of spatial cognition
in information displays. The interface design will provide information
display guidelines and interface development tools that can establish
parameters for optimizing the placement of tools, organization
of menus and data, and clustering of procedures for mobile, augmented-reality
and immersive virtual reality users.
The duration of this project is three years.
The M.I.N.D. Labs are a network of seven international labs working
together to collaborate on research projects, combining their
individual specialties and strengths to create a research body
stronger than the simple sum of its parts.
